West Ferris U19A Captures Silver at Provincials!

The West Ferris Ringette Association’s U19A team brought home a silver medal from the Provincial Championships held in Pickering over the weekend.
Competing in the McCarthy division, the 63s went 6-0 during round robin play, scoring 30 goals and only allowing 11 goals against. They showed their dominance early with a decisive 9-2 win over a team from Owen Sound. The winning streak continued with wins against teams from Pickering (3-1), London (3-1), Oshawa (8-3), Gloucester Cumberland (4-2) and Markham (3-2), earning them a by into the final game against the second place Markham Bears.
The 63s scored early in the final game and kept Markham scoreless for much of the first period. However, Markham stole the momentum early in the second period and the game ended with a 3-1 hard fought loss for our 63s.
After ending last season as the second place team in all of Ontario as a U16A team, this has been a building year for a very young  U19A team, with most of the team underage or first year players.

Team East hoisted the East West Cup last night at the conclusion of the annual ringette event, but it wasn’t easy! The needed victory by the U19 East Side was secured with a surge late in the game. The U19 victory tied the East Side and West Side with 2 victories a piece at the conclusion of the event, but a better goal differential (+6), broke the points tie and handed the East Side the Cup, wrestling it away from defending Cup champion West Side.

The evening began with the U10 East Side shooting out the lights on the West Side, with a convincing 7-1 victory. The West Side kept it close in the first period, down 3-1, but the East exploded with 4 unanswered goals in the second half to ensure the win.

The U12 teams matched up in the second game of the evening. It was an exciting, fast-paced affair, with plenty of action and plenty of goals! In the end, the West Side secured an 8-6 win, tying the East and West Sides on the night.

The West Side pulled ahead in the competition when the U15 West Side squeaked out a 5-4 victory in the 3rd game of the night. A 4-2 West Side lead late in the game couldn’t be upheld, with a determined East Side never giving up. Two goals by the East in less than a minute tied the game with 2 minutes remaining, but the West managed to score the winner with just over one minute to go!

This set the stage for the U19 East Side…a victory was needed to earn the Cup for the East; a victory or a tie by the West meant the Cup was to stay with the West Side for another year. Two shorthanded teams battled it out in a game of 3 vs 3. The East Side pulled out front early in the game, and although the West made a push to tie in the second half, the East would not give up the lead! A 6-3 East victory meant the 2 sides won 2 games each, and the +6 goal differential gave the East Side the Cup for 2017.

Thank you to all the players, coaches, organizers and fans that helped make the East West night a special event for all who participated. All East Side teams can have their photos taken with the Cup at the year-end banquet!  More photos of the East Vs. West night are posted on the WFRA Facebook page!

West Ferris Rep teams bring home medals from Cambridge!

The West Ferris 63’s U12 and U16 Regional Teams and the U19 Provincial Team travelled to the Cambridge Ringette tournament January 6th to the 8th.  The 63’s U12 Regional Team ended up first in their division defeating all three competitors in the round robin play. They met up with Etobicoke in the finals, defeating them 13-10 to bring home the gold.

The U16’s lost to a host Cambridge team 6-1 in their first game, however, bounced back strong on Saturday winning their next 2 games which led them to the gold medal game on Sunday where they eventually settled for a silver medal, falling to a physically strong Cambridge squad (8-3).

The U19A team came on strong at the beginning of the tournament with a decisive 7-2 win against the Cambridge Turbos. Their second game was against a fast skating team from Alberta. It was a close game that ended up in a 5-3 loss for the 63s. On Saturday, the team was back in the win column with a 9-1 win against Mississauga but fell short against Kitchener later on in the day. The two wins ensured the team a spot in the semis where they faced the Alberta Sting once more. Both teams came out determined to win with Alberta scoring the winning goal late in the game to beat the 63s 3-2.
